FactSep11x300

Some young people from the parish - and some that were more young at heart - had a great trip to Fellowship Afloat last weekend. We enjoyed a very busy weekend of team games, cake, archery, cake, and a trip out on to the Blackwater estuary, some more cake, and some great music and a bit of Rockclimbing!. Everyone seems to have had a really great weekend and our thanks go to the Fellowship Afloat staff for looking after us and the St Marys leaders for organizing it all.

A few pictures are below but a much bigger collection will be shown to the Gospellers at the meeting on the 25th September. - See you then!

Conf11-300

St Marys was pleased to host group of twenty-four adults and young people, together with their supporters, who were confirmed by The Bishop Of Hertford on Sunday evening. The service, led by Bishop Paul, was a joint confirmation service with St Nicholas, Harpenden and took the theme of individuals standing up as Christians. St Marys was packed for the service and afterwards there were refreshments, photographs and of course a cake. The Bishop was also seen helping with the washing up!

More photographs can be seen below. Congratulations to all the candidates.

ParishWeekend
We had a wonderful time away last weekend, exploring our favourite stories, our life stories, our faith stories and the story of our church – past and present and then imagining what the next chapter might look like in the story of St Mary’s. Thank you to those who came and made it such a great experience and those who took on extra duties to allow us to be able to go.

St Marys looked truely amazing for the Flower Festival this weekend. It was very difficult to capture the quality of the flowers, but here are a few images.

Holiday and Vacation PDF Print E-mail

We’re approaching a time of year when many will be looking forward to some kind of holiday. It might be a school holiday, a visit to friends or family further afield or a full scale trip overseas to somewhere exotic. As a family, we’re off to Crete for a couple of weeks and I’m really looking forward to it. In fact, we went to the same place last year and it was so perfect that we’re lucky enough to be able to go back. It just ticks all the boxes – a small and friendly complex of apartments, great pool, mezé lunches, a stone’s throw to the beach and a short walk to the town. But in going there, I know how fortunate we are to have such a break. It wasn’t so long ago that holidays were not this sort of thing at all. The root of the word ‘holiday’ is of course ‘holy-day’ and most people would have had Christmas Day, Good Friday, Ascension Day and possibly a few other days as time off work in order to be able to go to church. This, of course, implies that the rest of the year they would be working solidly.

This Sunday (24th) is Bible Sunday so why not take this opportunity to think about reading the bible for a few minutes each day as a regular discipline to grow in faith?

But did you know that on the internet you can get bible readings by email, by podcast, with pictures that inspire or even as a app for your iphone....  One such service comes from Scripture Union, why not take a look at WordLive, and perhaps let us know what you think through the Facebook page!

A number of the young people of the parish have just returned from a weekend staying on a retired Trinity House lightship on the Blackwater estuary. This is where a Christian outdoor centre, Fellowship Afloat, have their base and as you might image it was a very busy weekend which included Archery, Games, Powerboating, Sailing, Walking and Rock climbing. Even with all that going on we had time to think about our faiths and enjoy the company of each other. Everyone had a great time and a big thank you goes to the staff at Fellowship Afloat who looked after us so well.
